JUNE 11- Well it sure was a whirlwind week but I survived. The Rehoboth Beach Market opened Tuesday afternoon and it sure was incredible! Guess the beach is starved for fresh produce! And honey....I have almost sold out of all that Jack robbed 2 weeks ago. Even had to borrow some jars from another keeper since we haven't had a chance to get to Lancaster for our year's supply. Wednesday was the Milford Garden Club's end of the year picnic at which Mason received their annual $1000 scholarship. Yay! Melanie finished 8th grade and had a nice ceremony Friday AM. Then home to pick for the Milford Market on Saturday. After the marketon Saturday, rushed out to Lake Forest High School for Melanie's end of the year dance recital which was outstanding! Back home again to chop, prep, and cook for Mason's Graduation Party scheduled for Sunday. Up early Sunday AM to cook, clean and stress for the party which began at 2. Our friends and co-vendors at the farmer's markets, Delaware Provisions Company, catered some of the food which was excellent! They also have awesome fresh and smoked kielbasa so be sure to visit them at the markets in Rehoboth and Milford. Party was well attended and Mason was happy to receive so many gifts. Now, I can say my summer is actually beginning...Jack unfortunately still has 2 more weeks of college till he can chill. But he will graduate with his masters degree and will have more free time to devote to the general labor department! The produce is coming on fast and furious. See the "What's in Season this week" page to keep up with what is available. Well, pray for rain and God bless! SusanMAY 30-- Good news...Jack robbed honey this week so I will have it for sale at this week's Milford Market and next week's opening of the new Rehoboth Beach Farmer's Market. Also this week at Milford is the annual Strawberry Social, formerly called the Strawberry Festival. Sponsored by the Friends of the Milford Library, starting at 11 AM they will be distributing FREE strawberries and ice cream while supplies last. Well, the school year is almost over and tomorrow Mason will graduate from Sussex Tech. Last night was the senior awards program and he walked away with a lot of honors. He received the outstanding student awards in both science and environmental, placed third in the state for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award. He also received 3 scholarships to add to the other 4 he had already received. And was honored with several other awards. Melanie will be performing Friday night at her final concert with the Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences before moving on to Milford High School. We are very proud of both of our kids accomplishments (in case you couldn't tell!). Jack will graduate from Wilmington College in June with his Masters degree in Applied Technology/Education. Me...I'm just farming!Wow..May already????OK... best laid plans and all that...I don't know where the winter went but I sure have been busy. The greenhouse was and still is brimming. After three weeks of the Milford Farmer's Market and the Herb Festival, I now have room to start some more stuff for later in the season. Thanks to all of my customers who have done their share in making room! I still have a good selection of herbs, flowers, and some tomatoes and peppers but can't promise anything lasting so do come out and get your stuff now so you won't be disappointed. The market garden is finally looking like a garden. I planted the first crop in late March when we had those 2 80 degree days. Unfortunately, that was followed by a week of 28 degrees so nothing was gained. In fact the first crop came up at the same time the 2nd crop did. I will have radishes for the market this Saturday if we don't eat them all by then! We also decided to put in a you-pick strawberry patch in the front pasture for next season. Also some you-pick wildflowers. The back pasture we planted with white clover for our bees. We ended up the season with only one hive but have since purchased 3 more so with any luck they will produce enough for all. First honey is expected off in June so be patient! Family news: Mason will graduate from Sussex Tech High School on May 31! Hard to believe! He is on a waiting list for Cornell University but may just end up going to Del Tech for a year or two on the SEED program. Melanie will be going into 9th grade next year at Milford High. Jack is in his last class for his Masters Degree at Wilmington College and will graduate in June. I am proud of them all! Well, better get to the weeds. Susan
