MAY 30-- Good news...Jack robbed honey this week so I will have it for sale at this week's Milford Market and next week's opening of the new Rehoboth Beach Farmer's Market. Also this week at Milford is the annual Strawberry Social, formerly called the Strawberry Festival. Sponsored by the Friends of the Milford Library, starting at 11 AM they will be distributing FREE strawberries and ice cream while supplies last. Well, the school year is almost over and tomorrow Mason will graduate from Sussex Tech. Last night was the senior awards program and he walked away with a lot of honors. He received the outstanding student awards in both science and environmental, placed third in the state for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award. He also received 3 scholarships to add to the other 4 he had already received. And was honored with several other awards. Melanie will be performing Friday night at her final concert with the Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences before moving on to Milford High School. We are very proud of both of our kids accomplishments (in case you couldn't tell!). Jack will graduate from Wilmington College in June with his Masters degree in Applied Technology/Education. Me...I'm just farming!Wow..May already????OK... best laid plans and all that...I don't know where the winter went but I sure have been busy. The greenhouse was and still is brimming. After three weeks of the Milford Farmer's Market and the Herb Festival, I now have room to start some more stuff for later in the season. Thanks to all of my customers who have done their share in making room! I still have a good selection of herbs, flowers, and some tomatoes and peppers but can't promise anything lasting so do come out and get your stuff now so you won't be disappointed. The market garden is finally looking like a garden. I planted the first crop in late March when we had those 2 80 degree days. Unfortunately, that was followed by a week of 28 degrees so nothing was gained. In fact the first crop came up at the same time the 2nd crop did. I will have radishes for the market this Saturday if we don't eat them all by then! We also decided to put in a you-pick strawberry patch in the front pasture for next season. Also some you-pick wildflowers. The back pasture we planted with white clover for our bees. We ended up the season with only one hive but have since purchased 3 more so with any luck they will produce enough for all. First honey is expected off in June so be patient! Family news: Mason will graduate from Sussex Tech High School on May 31! Hard to believe! He is on a waiting list for Cornell University but may just end up going to Del Tech for a year or two on the SEED program. Melanie will be going into 9th grade next year at Milford High. Jack is in his last class for his Masters Degree at Wilmington College and will graduate in June. I am proud of them all! Well, better get to the weeds. SusanHAPPY 2007I have decided to start over on my blog as I was not very faithful in keeping up with it. Not that I may keep up with this one either.... I have just completed ordering all of my seeds for the 2007 season. With the addition of the new Rehoboth Beach Farmer's Market on Tuesdays from 3PM-6:30 PM we are going to have to increase our output to sustain the Milford Market on Saturday mornings as well. Hopefully the bees are doing their part. We are completely sold out of our 2006 honey and won't have more until around June. We only have 2 hives but they are both hanging in there. I think they aare liking this unseasonably warm winter also. The chickens even lay more eggs in the warmer weather. We will also be increasing our flock size this spring to accommodate all of our loyal and new customers. We have decided to drop the beef business at least for now. We will be doing a few pigs this spring. If you are interested in pork please email us as we only buy as many as we sell. They are not a great money maker but the meat sure is good! And our butcher has a smokehouse and makes the best ham, bacon, sausage, and scrapple! I will be starting in the greenhouse next week...That is my method for making spring come sooner for once I get started, I am always behind! Will post again soon! Susan
